Ways to contribute

3 min read

There is no wrong way to be here. Most members show up, learn and help now and then, and that is exactly what this community is for.

Join, then show up, then help when you can, then get recognised, then join a team if you want

NOTE

All roles in the community are voluntary and unpaid, including team leads. What you gain is experience, credit, and a public record of your work.

Show up

Nothing is expected of you here.

  • Come to events. Our live chats on X (called X Spaces), meetups and conferences are on the events page. Add them to your calendar so you never miss one.
  • Ask and answer in channel ask-for-help.
  • Share what you are building. Get feedback, find people to build with.
  • Learn. For courses and mentorship, go to Codetopia Academy.

Help when you can

Jump in when a team asks in channel get-involved, volunteer at an event, help someone who is stuck, or, if you code, fix something in our code (those tasks live on GitHub and appear in channel github-help-wanted). Help out shows how, step by step, and how you get recognised for it.

Help out

Write for the blog

Learned or built something worth sharing? Write about it for our blog, under your own name. You do not need to be an expert, and an editor helps you get it ready.

Improve these guides

Spotted a typo, a broken link, or a step that no longer matches what you see? Anyone can fix it, member or not.

These guides live on GitHub, a website where people keep projects and work on them together. If you're new to it, start with Your first pull request, in your browser, then see Contributing to these guides.

Join a team

The community is run by five teams of volunteers. Each team has a lead.

Joining a team means a few hours a month for three months. After that, you choose whether to carry on.

Want to do more?

Want to join a team, or have something to offer (design skills, a project idea)? Post in channel get-involved with the team's tag and a line about yourself. To get a lead's attention, mention them with @ in your post. The leads are pinned at the top of channel get-involved. Never posted in a forum on Discord? The Using Discord shows how.

If you're not sure which team, ask in channel ask-for-help.

There is no application form. Most people end up on a team simply by helping, and a lead asking them.

Once you're on a team

  • The lead sets you up. They add you to the team on the portal, and give you the team's role on Discord. That opens your team's private channel, under the TEAMS heading in the channel list. Your team talks there.
  • You have a short first call with the lead, about 20 minutes: what the team needs this month, and who to ask when you are stuck.
  • You agree on your time. A few hours a month, for three months. Life gets busy: if you need to do less or stop, tell your lead. That is fine.
  • At the end of the three months, you choose whether to carry on. Finish your time well, and you go on the Wall of Impact as part of the Core Team, and you can ask for a reference.

Not sure where you fit?

Hang out, join conversations and come to events. This page will still be here when you want more.
