Getting unstuck, with AI and people

3 min read

Everyone gets stuck, whatever tech they are learning or working on. People with years of experience still get stuck. It does not mean you are bad at it. It is what learning feels like.

You have two kinds of help: AI tools, like ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini, and people, here in channel ask-for-help. Both are good, and they are good at different things.

You can ask people any time. You do not have to try AI first, and no question is too basic. Answering also helps the person who answers learn, so you are never a bother.

Use AI as a teacher, not an answer machine

AI can explain things at any hour. But studies found that people who copied answers from AI learned less, and did worse once the AI was gone. People who asked AI to explain things kept what they learned.

So ask it to teach you. For example:

  • "I'm learning. Explain this in simple words."
  • "Give me one hint, then wait."
  • "Why does this work?"
  • "Ask me questions to check I understood."

If your AI tool has a learning or study mode, turn it on. It gives hints and asks you questions instead of handing you the answer.

Before you use anything AI gave you, make sure you can explain it in your own words.

Check before you trust

AI often sounds sure when it is wrong, and its mistakes can look right.

  • Try it in a small way first, and check the result yourself.
  • Check the official source: the tool's own guide, the organisation's website, the real document.
  • Facts, prices, dates and rules change. AI may have old ones.
  • Open links yourself. AI sometimes makes up links, names and quotes.
  • Only download or install things from the official site or store.
  • Could it cost money or cause harm? Ask a person first.

WARNING

Never share secrets with AI or on Discord: passwords, sign-in codes, your Ghana Card number, bank details, or anyone else's personal details. If one gets out, change it straight away.

When to ask a person

Ask in channel ask-for-help when:

  • You don't trust the AI's answer, or want it checked. "AI told me this. Is it right?" is a great question.
  • AI keeps giving different answers, or goes round in circles.
  • You don't understand why something works.
  • It depends on your own situation, account or equipment.
  • It is about Codetopia, events, jobs or opportunities in Ghana, or your career.
  • You want a real person's opinion on your work or your next step.

Or any time you would just rather ask a person.

Help someone else

When you know something, answer a question in channel ask-for-help. Explaining is one of the best ways to learn.

  • Answer in your own words. If AI helped you, check it and say so.
  • Explain why, not just the answer. A hint often helps more.
  • Never reply "just ask ChatGPT", and never make fun of a question.

Next: ask your question

Ask a good question shows you how to post in channel ask-for-help, step by step.
