Ways to Contribute

Contributing to the Codetopia Community is not just about writing code. Whatever your skills, there is a place for you here. This guide walks you through every way you can get involved.

Who can contribute?

On GitHub: anyone. You do not need to be a member to open an issue, fix a typo, or submit a pull request to any of our repos. If you spot something, fix it. Contributions are welcome from everyone.

Beyond GitHub, you need to be a member. Contribution paths like joining a department, writing for our blog, mentoring, and volunteering at events are open to verified members of the community only.

Contributing on GitHub but not a member yet? Join us. You will be able to talk directly with maintainers, have your work recognized inside the community, and unlock every other way to contribute on this page. It takes a few minutes.

Quick contributions

These are things you can do today, no long-term commitment needed.

Fix something on GitHub

Spotted a typo in our docs? A broken link? A bug on the website? You can report it or fix it yourself, even if you have never contributed to a project before. Our guides walk you through it step by step.

Write something

There are two ways to contribute through writing:

  • Howtos — practical guides like the one you are reading now. Found a trick, solved a problem, or figured out something other members struggle with? Write it up and show the community how to do it. Howtos live in our community-howtos repo and anyone can contribute through GitHub, the same way as code. šŸ‘‰ Contributing on GitHub

  • Technical articles — longer tutorials, deep dives, and lessons learned, published on our Hashnode blog by approved community writers. Want to write for the blog? Apply and we will get back to you. šŸ‘‰ Apply to become a writer

Help at an event

We run community events regularly. Speakers, volunteers, and helping hands are always welcome, even for a single event. Interested? Say so in #EVENTS-CHANNEL-PLACEHOLDER and the events team will pick it up.

Join a department

If you want to contribute in an ongoing way, our departments are where the real work happens. Each one is a team of members who keep a part of the community running. Read through them and see where you fit.

  • Mentorship and member growth — guiding members one-on-one and helping them level up. This is for you if you enjoy seeing someone else win because of your support.

  • Learning — building learning content, curriculum, and study programs. This is for you if you like breaking hard things down so beginners can understand them.

  • Research and insights — understanding our members, what they need, and how the community is doing. This is for you if you like asking questions, gathering data, and finding out what is really going on.

  • Comms, branding and marketing — how the Codetopia Community looks, sounds, and reaches people. This is for you if you care about design, storytelling, or getting the word out.

  • Projects and open source — driving our open source projects and coordinating the people who contribute to them. This is for you if you want to build in public and help others do the same.

  • Events — planning and running community events, online and in person. This is for you if you like bringing people together and making things happen behind the scenes.

  • Partnership — building relationships with organizations, companies, and other communities. This is for you if you are a connector and enjoy opening doors.

  • Operations — keeping the community machinery running day to day. This is for you if you are organized and hate watching things fall through the cracks.

  • Technical — the infrastructure behind the community: the portal, website, bots, and tooling. This is for you if you want to build and maintain real systems that hundreds of members use every day.

How to join a department

Head over to #DEPARTMENTS-CHANNEL-PLACEHOLDER on Discord and post which department you are interested in and a line or two about why. The department lead will reach out, have a quick chat with you, and get you started with your first task.

Not sure where you fit?

That is completely fine. Hang out, join conversations, show up to events. Contribution starts with being present. When you are ready, this page will still be here.
